Dr Breeze is Wilk McKean. Born and raised in New Orleans, he grew up with the sounds of Dixieland jazz, rhythm and blues, and pop. At the age of ten, his grandfather bought him a trumpet and he learned the basics of music, hoping to be the next Al Hirt. In 1964, his life changed forever when he heard the Beatles on the radio. He bought his first guitar at the age of twelve and like the song said "played until my fingers bled". He was playing his first professional gigs by the age of fifteen, and by the time he was legal to be in clubs, he had already played his share of them. He played in groups with names like The Shadows of Eternity, Potter's Field and Bayou. During this time, he also had the opportunity to work as a vocalist in some of the areas top recording studios. In addition to working in studios and playing, he was also compiling a nice collection of original music. He also wrote and sold a couple of radio jingles. In 1979, he helped form a group called Flite, a group which continued to be a popular musical influence on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain for over twenty-five years until the tragic loss of drummer and founding member, Kevin Frere. He stayed with Flite playing numerous venues including clubs, weddings, private parties, Mardi Gras balls and fairs until 1989.
In April 1989, he left the U.S. for a seven-year European tour. Living in England and Germany, he played with a pair of German musicians in a trio called The Night Dogs. Living and playing in Europe was a tremendous experience. He met many interesting people, made many friends for life, learned a lot about European cultures and even got fluent in German. He learned some English too. Eventually all good things must end, and so it was that he returned stateside in 1996.
He thought Pensacola would be a good place to settle. He'd always enjoyed visiting the gulf coast, and having traveled to exotic places like Hong Kong, Hawaii, Palma Majorca, Cannes, Cyprus, and the Caribbean, he considered the area from Gulf Shores, AL to Panama City, FL to have some of the best beaches in the world. Being such a joy to live and play right there on the Redneck Riviera, he's happy to call it home. Finding work at first wasn't easy for this new kid on the block, as the area has an abundance of fine musicians. Several years later, however, he enjoys just about all the work he can handle entertaining at private parties, corporate conferences and weddings at some of the area's finest resorts. He's also had a chance to put together five CD's of original music and collaborations with some of his good friends which he produces in his home recording studio for his End of the Road record label. He recently finished writing his first stage musical, Emerald Coast, a historical fiction set in Pensacola in 1896 and hopes to produce it soon.
